Kerala Curriculum Reformation

In alignment with the National Curriculum Framework (2020), the decision has been made to embark on comprehensive curriculum reforms across four key areas: preschool education, school education, teacher education, and adult education. The impetus behind these reforms stems from the recognition that the existing curriculum falls short in addressing the dynamic changes in technology, science, and education. Moreover, there is a need for the scientific integration of vocational education with the school curriculum. Acknowledging the imperative need for children to acquire knowledge about environmental protection and natural disaster management, the curriculum and textbooks are slated for an eco-friendly approach. Expert groups, focusing on 26 critical areas such as the vision of education, early childhood care and development, curriculum, and psychology, have finalized discussion notes. The main highlight of curriculum construction in Kerala is that it was framed after a very democratic way, compiling the suggestions and opinions of the different strata of people including parents, teachers, common public and even the children. For this public discussions were held compiling proposals from people including children were gathered through a tech platform which was systematically organized committees at school, block, panchayat, and district levels. These discussions and proposals played a pivotal role in shaping the framework. The syllabus grid has been constructed based on the new curriculum frameworks, developed through discussions at various levels. Subsequently, textbooks for Std 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 were crafted following the syllabus grid, ensuring a more responsive and contemporary educational landscape.
